A Springfield car dealer was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years probation on Wednesday for changing odometers on cars to misrepresent their mileage, according to a release from the Missouri Attorney General.
Ashley Bolton could land in prison for four years if he violates the terms of his probation, which include not working as or for a licensed automobile dealer. Bolton must also pay restitution to consumers in an amount that will be set at a March 10 hearing, the release says.
Bolton pleaded guilty in September to two felony counts of unlawful merchandising practices, the release says.
An investigation found that Bolton misrepresented the actual mileage of vehicles being sold at Excel Auto Group in 2011 and 2012.
The release says Bolton bought one car with more than 180,000 miles and sold it representing it had 99,000 miles. Another car he bought with nearly 220,000 miles but sold it representing it had 119,000 miles.
Consumers who suspect odometer fraud should call the Missouri Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-392-8222 or file a complaint on the website at ago.mo.gov.
